WASHINGTON, Nov. 19, 2015 – The Food and Drug Administration has approved a fast-growing, genetically engineered salmon for commercial sale, making it the first biotech animal cleared for human consumption.

“After an exhaustive and rigorous scientific review, FDA has arrived at the decision that AquAdvantage salmon is as safe to eat as any non-genetically engineered (GE) Atlantic salmon, and also as nutritious,” the agency said.

[They said THAT about EVERY GM Product On The Market…We Saw How THAT’S Worked Out…AHEM!]

FDA also said the multiple containment measures that the fish’s developer, AquaBounty Technologies, would employ at its land-based production facilities in Panama and Canada should prevent the fish from posing an environmental risk. [https://aquabounty.com/]

The agency declined to require that the fish be labeled as genetically engineered and instead released draft guidance for labeling salmon.

[Today…We Have The ‘SALMON SURPRISE’!]

FDA says it doesn’t have the legal basis [They Have Some Of The Most Over-Paid “Mouth-Pieces” On The Planet-Just Ask Michael Taylor-Formerly Of Monsanto…He Was THEIR ‘Chief Counsel’ For YEARS!] to require labeling of biotech foods that are materially the same as their conventional counterpart.

Labeling considered appropriate under the guidance include the term “genetically engineered” and statements such as:

“This salmon patty was made from Atlantic salmon produced using modern biotechnology.”

The guidance explains “how to make it easy for consumers to know whether a food was produced using genetic engineering or not,” says Felicia Billingslea,, director of FDA’s Division of Food Labeling and Standards.

FDA also released final guidance for voluntary labeling of foods derived from genetically engineered plants.

[Yep…GE Food Sellers Will Do That…RIGHT.]

The document includes advice on how non-GMO foods should be labeled.

For example, non-GMO statements that would be OK with the agency include:

“Not bioengineered;”

“Not genetically modified through the use of modern biotechnology,”

“We do not use ingredients that were produced using modern biotechnology,”

and “This oil is made from soybeans that were not genetically engineered.”

AquaBounty said its salmon would “offer the opportunity for an economically viable domestic aquaculture industry while providing consumers a fresh and delicious product.”

The United States currently imports 95 percent of the Atlantic salmon now on the market.

“Land-based aquaculture systems can provide a continuous supply of fresh, safe, traceable and sustainable” salmon “with a reduced carbon footprint,” the company said.

But under pressure from critics of the fish, Safeway, Kroger and several major grocery chains have said they would not sell the product.

“We are deeply disappointed with the FDA’s decision to approve the AquaAdvantage salmon,” said Michael Hansen, senior scientist with Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports.

“And it’s even more concerning that the FDA chose not to require any form of labeling, making it extremely difficult for consumers to know if the salmon is GE or not.”

The environmental activist group Friends of the Earth said the FDA action would set a precedent for commercializing other biotech animals.

At least 35 other species of genetically engineered fish, along with chickens, pigs and cows, are under development, the group said.

“Despite FDA’s flawed and irresponsible approval of the first genetically engineered animal for human consumption, it’s clear that there is no place in the U.S. market for genetically engineered salmon.” said Lisa Archer, the group’s food and technology program director.

The biotech industry welcomed the decision.

[”Mo Money! MO MONEY!”]

“Animal biotechnology can improve livestock to require less feed, produce more protein, and reduce environmental impact, while also providing for enhanced animal health and welfare,” said Jim Greenwood, CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

“Other animal biotechnology applications can improve human health through faster discovery of cures, improved medicines and life-saving tissues and organs.”

The Video Above Is From Dec 29, 2012-And Is Still On Point.

When Barack Obama was campaigning in 2007, he said something that I’d been yearning to hear from a politician.

He vowed, as president, he would strive to “let folks know when their food is genetically modified because Americans have a right to know what they’re buying.”

I realize the difference between campaigning and being president is much like the difference between dating and being married — but that seemed like a pretty solid statement.

Europe has required all foods containing ingredients genetically modified to be labeled since 1997.

Over 60 countries, including China and Russia, require food manufacturers to label GMOs.

Forty percent of the world’s population can tell if they are feeding their families altered foods or not.

It has been SEVEN years, and we haven’t heard a peep from President Obama on this issue.

In November 2012, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act was on the ballot.

It was simple: “The initiative would simply require food sold in retail outlets to be labeled if it contains genetically engineered ingredients.”

It seemed like a no brainer since the labels already have to include calories, sugar grams, fats, sodium — why am I telling you?

You’ve read them.

Monsanto (read “from the devil”) and agriculture corporations spent $45 million to defeat the California initiative.

Because they can’t compete in the “free market” — shoppers prefer their food closer to how God intended, at least genetically speaking, and don’t realize over 60 percent of what is on the grocery store shelves has been altered already.

OK, so this may not be your issue, or you may be aware of it for the first time, but here’s where I get fit to be tied.

For close to two decades AquaBounty, an outfit from Massachusetts, has been genetically modifying salmon.

Apparently the whole spawning in gravel upriver, natural progression, years in the ocean and swimming back to the home creek is just pesky.

It takes too long.

They hybridize an Atlantic salmon with a chinook salmon gene and then sprinkle in a gene from an eel-like ocean pout that “keeps a vital growth hormone activated rather than shutting it down after a certain point” so it grows twice as fast.

Does it have bolts sticking out under its gills?

Mary Shelley wouldn’t eat this thing.

This creature would be the first genetically modified animal to hit the market.

(Lord only knows what kind of “just add water and get a veal” will come next.)

From An Article By Mary Clare Jalonick in the Nov 19th Alaska Dispatch News:

“…The salmon has also faced opposition in Congress.

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican, has vehemently opposed the approval, saying the engineered salmon could harm her state’s wild salmon industry.

She called the FDA’s approval “potentially disastrous” and said she will swiftly push legislation to mandate labeling of the modified fish.

The FDA said the fish “would not have significant environmental impact.”

The agency said the salmon can only be raised in land-based, contained hatchery tanks in two facilities in Canada and Panama, and that other facilities in the U.S. or elsewhere cannot breed the salmon for human consumption.

The agency said that there are “multiple and redundant levels of physical barriers” in the facilities to prevent the escape of fish.

The fish would be bred to be female and sterile, so if any did escape, they would not be able to breed.

[A Famous Line From Jurassic Park Reminds: “Nature WILL Find A Way…”]

The agency said it will inspect the facilities, as will the Canadian and Panamanian governments.

[Yep…The FINEST MONEY Can BUY…Ahem!]
